**Gov. Whitmer Responds to Trump’s Projected 2024 Election Victory**
Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, a notable Democratic figure involved in Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign, has addressed the recent developments following Donald Trump's anticipated victory in the 2024 presidential election. Trump, who won his first term in 2016 but lost in 2020, is projected to have secured key battleground states such as Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, North Carolina, and Georgia.
In a statement released Wednesday by her office, Whitmer acknowledged that "the American people have spoken" and expressed her hope that Trump would strive to unite the nation, including those who did not support him. "As governor of the great state of Michigan, my job remains the same no matter who is in the White House," Whitmer said, recognizing the conclusion of Harris' campaign efforts.
Whitmer, currently concluding her second term, has had a contentious relationship with Trump, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. The former president had previously referred to her as "That Woman from Michigan," a moniker Whitmer humorously turned on its head during her Democratic National Convention speech by calling Trump "That man from Mar-a-Lago."
Despite speculation about her as a potential vice-presidential candidate, Whitmer consistently maintained her commitment to her gubernatorial duties and supported the Harris campaign from her current position.
Additionally, Michigan Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist issued a statement, emphasizing the integrity of the election process and extending best wishes to President-elect Trump. "Through a safe, secure election, Michiganders have made their voices heard," Gilchrist stated. He also praised Vice President Harris for her "incredible campaign" and expressed pride in the statewide Democratic movement aimed at fostering significant change for Michigan families.
