### GOP Leaders Urge VP Harris to Temper Rhetoric Ahead of Elections

In a rare show of unity, House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell have jointly called on Vice President Kamala Harris to moderate her language in the run-up to Election Day. The request comes after Harris recently labeled former President Donald Trump a fascist during a CNN town hall.

Johnson and McConnell criticized Harris in a statement, accusing her of exacerbating "political animus" and daring it to escalate further. They insisted on the cessation of what they described as "base and irresponsible rhetoric" which they believe endangers American lives and institutions. Furthermore, they called on Harris to ensure Trump has the necessary protection against potential threats during this volatile period.

This appeal from the top Republican leaders notably omits any mention of Trump's own inflammatory comments about Harris. The former president has referred to her with a slew of harsh labels including "fascist," "marxist," "communist," and "comrade." Trump has also criticized various political figures, including Democratic Representative Adam Schiff and former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, advocating for the prosecution of domestic political opponents.

Johnson has sought to downplay Trump's remarks, suggesting that they were not aimed at specific politicians and denying claims that Trump intended to use military force against Adam Schiff. Nevertheless, Trump's controversial statements have fueled ongoing tensions.

Interestingly, recent excerpts from a biography on McConnell reveal candid and unflattering private remarks about Trump, with McConnell allegedly describing the former president as "stupid," "ill-tempered," and a "despicable human being" after the events of January 6. Despite their previously icy relationship, McConnell has since aligned with Trump, accepting him as the GOP's nominee.

The Harris campaign has not yet responded to requests for comment. Meanwhile, Harris continues to use Trump's authoritarian tendencies and his role in inciting the January 6 Capitol riot as key points in her campaign rhetoric. Her upcoming speech at the Ellipse location, where Trump had previously incited supporters to march on Congress, is anticipated to be her final pitch before the elections.

The political landscape remains tense as the election draws near, with high-profile races such as that between Senator Tammy Baldwin and Republican businessman Eric Hovde further electrifying the atmosphere. Baldwin, who won her last election comfortably, faces a more challenging contest this time around, amid intensified political fervor.
