In a significant development regarding the 2020 US election, a grand jury in Arizona has indicted GOP attorney Christina Bobb along with 17 other former Donald Trump officials and Republicans. These indictments are related to their alleged roles in an attempted overthrow of President Joe Biden's victory over Trump.
The news immediately drew attention, particularly from former GOP Representative Liz Cheney, who expressed her concerns about the Republican National Committee's choice of Bobb as their senior counsel for election integrity. Cheney took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to highlight the irony of the situation. She tweeted, "This tells you all you need to know about today's Republican National Committee: The person in charge of election integrity for the @GOP was just indicted in Arizona for lack of election integrity."
In addition to Bobb, the grand jury also indicted former Trump Chief of Staff Mark Meadows and Rudy Giuliani, Trump's lawyer. The indictment, which was released on Wednesday, includes the names of 11 Republicans who submitted a document to Congress falsely claiming that Trump had won Arizona in the 2020 election. Among those charged are the former state party chair, a 2022 US Senate candidate, and two sitting state lawmakers. Each of them faces nine counts of conspiracy, fraud, and forgery.
This indictment makes Arizona the fourth state in which allies of the former president have been charged with spreading false or unverified claims regarding voter fraud in connection with the 2020 election.
It is worth noting that Trump himself was indicted in August in federal court for his efforts to hold onto power following his defeat, including involvement in a fake electors scheme. The US Supreme Court is set to hear arguments on Thursday regarding Trump's claim that he cannot be prosecuted for acts committed while serving as president.
The indictments in Arizona underscore the ongoing scrutiny surrounding the 2020 election and the actions taken by some individuals in an attempt to overturn the election results. The legal proceedings will undoubtedly continue to grab headlines as the consequences of these alleged attempts to undermine the democratic process are examined in court.
