In an unexpected turn of events during Thursday night's presidential debate hosted by CNN, golf handicaps became a controversial topic of discussion. President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump engaged in a heated argument about their physical fitness and how it related to their ability to serve as the head of state at their respective ages of 81 and 78.

President Biden initially claimed to have a golf handicap of six during his tenure as vice president, though he later corrected himself to say it was actually eight. This revelation surprised many avid golfers, including Trump, who expressed skepticism about the accuracy of Biden's claim. Suddenly, a discussion typically reserved for the golf course found its way onto the debate stage.

To truly grasp the significance of this argument, it is essential to understand the basics of a golf handicap. A handicap index is a numerical figure that assesses a player's ability or potential skill level by quantifying how many strokes they are expected to play above a specific course's par. Generally, a handicap under 10 is considered low, while anything above 19 is considered high. A score of zero indicates a scratch golfer.

Biden's claimed handicap of six or eight suggests that he averages in the high 70s or low 80s per round, a remarkable feat for any golfer. According to data compiled by the United States Golf Association (USGA) as of January 2024, the average handicap index for men was around 14, with women averaging 28. Only 20% of male golfers fell within the index range of 0.5 to 9.9.

It is worth noting that comparing average golfers to professional golfers would be unfair due to the significant differences in the difficulty of the courses they play. While professional golfers do not keep an official handicap, some have estimated what their indexes would be if they did. In 2020, golf statistical expert Lou Stagner calculated the best indexes for PGA Tour pros based on data from 2016 to 2020. Rickie Fowler claimed the top spot with a best index of +8.4, followed closely by Kevin Na and Tiger Woods with a best index of +8.3. The average index for a PGA Tour pro was approximately +5.4.

While the debate on golf handicaps may never reach a conclusive resolution, professional golfer Bryson DeChambeau has offered to settle the argument once and for all. DeChambeau, with an average index of +5.8, proposed hosting a golf match on his YouTube channel to determine who truly holds the superior handicap.

As the presidential candidates continue their campaign trail, only time will tell if the golf handicap debate will remain a talking point or fade into the background. It seems that even amidst the weight of pressing national issues, golf handicaps can still capture the spotlight and ignite passionate discussions.
