In a tragic turn of events, a police officer in Germany has lost his life after intervening in a knife attack at an anti-Islam rally in Mannheim. The 29-year-old officer had been in a coma since Friday, with stab wounds to the back of his head. However, he succumbed to his injuries on Sunday, June 2, according to a joint statement released by police and prosecutors.

The incident occurred when a 25-year-old man was captured on video stabbing the police officer and five members of an anti-Islam group known as PAX Europa at a booth in the city center. Notably, one of the injured individuals was Michael Stürzenberger, a member of the group's advisory board.

Investigators disclosed that the suspect, an Afghan citizen who had been living in Germany for approximately ten years, had no prior criminal record and had never come to the attention of law enforcement. An organization called for a human chain against violence and hate, drawing between 800 and 1,000 participants. Meanwhile, the youth wing of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party organized a demonstration, attended by approximately 150 people, advocating for "remigration" as a means to prevent such crimes. Left-wing antifascist activists also organized an unregistered counter-protest, resulting in clashes with the police. Several individuals involved in the counter-protest were detained, with one being investigated for allegedly assaulting a police officer.
