German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has emphasized the importance of an open and fair European market for Chinese cars during his visit to China. Speaking to students at Tongji University in Shanghai, Scholz highlighted the need to prevent dumping, overproduction, and intellectual property infringements.

Accompanied by three ministers and leading German executives, Scholz's visit to China has garnered attention as Europe seeks to address concerns regarding perceived dumping of Chinese goods in its market. The Chancellor recognized the potential for Chinese cars to enter Germany and Europe, but stressed the necessity for fair competition.

Scholz called for an equal playing field, emphasizing that competition must be conducted without dumping practices, overproduction, or copyright violations. He also emphasized the significance of enabling companies to establish production facilities without bureaucratic obstacles.

During his speech, Scholz highlighted the principles of peaceful coexistence between small and large countries, advocating against using force to change borders. Although not explicitly mentioning China, his statements alluded to the need for mutual respect among all nations.

On Tuesday, Scholz is set to meet with President Xi Jinping, where he plans to inquire about China's support for Russia's wartime economy, specifically in light of Moscow's invasion of Ukraine two years ago. The German government and businesses remain cautious about potential conflicts, particularly concerning Taiwan.

Addressing students, Scholz drew a comparison between global values and neighborly relations, asserting that countries should not fear their neighbors. He expressed the desire for peaceful neighborly interactions, even with larger, more powerful nations, highlighting the importance of maintaining trust and ensuring mutual understanding.

Scholz's visit to China signifies Germany's commitment to fair trade practices and the promotion of international cooperation. As discussions with Chinese officials continue, the Chancellor's focus on fair competition aims to establish a level playing field for all businesses seeking to enter the European market.
