In a significant recruiting victory, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets have added talented offensive tackle Josh Petty to their 2025 class. Petty, a 6-foot-5, 255-pound standout from Roswell, Georgia, chose Georgia Tech over other prestigious programs like Ohio State, Florida State, Tennessee, and Stanford. According to ESPN rankings, Petty is the No. 27 overall prospect and the sixth-ranked offensive tackle in the 2025 cycle.
Petty's commitment is a testament to the growing momentum surrounding Georgia Tech both on and off the field. Head coach Brent Key, entering his second full season in charge, has elevated expectations after leading the Yellow Jackets to a 7-6 record in 2023, their best finish since 2018. Petty's decision adds further excitement to the program, making him the highest-ranked commit of the ESPN recruiting rankings era dating back to 2006.
The 2025 class at Georgia Tech is shaping up to be a historic one, as Petty becomes the fourth ESPN 300 prospect to pledge his commitment. He joins cornerback Dalen Penson (No. 171), offensive lineman Damola Ajidahun (No. 180), and offensive lineman Justin Hasenhuetl (No. 220) as highly touted recruits who have chosen to wear the Yellow Jackets' colors.
Petty, who also excels in wrestling, has demonstrated his prowess on the field as a two-way star player at Fellowship Christian High School in Georgia. In his junior year, he recorded an impressive 58 total tackles, including nine tackles for loss, five sacks, and an interception. His exceptional athleticism and length have made him one of the top offensive line prospects in the 2025 class, attracting offers from major college football programs across the nation.
Prior to committing to Georgia Tech, Petty embarked on a recruiting journey, visiting various universities, including Tennessee, Miami, Clemson, Georgia, Auburn, Texas, and Florida State. He concluded his exploration with official visits to Stanford, Tennessee, Ohio State, Florida State, and his future home at Georgia Tech.
While the interest from Florida State and late push from Ohio State posed potential threats, Petty's focus shifted towards the coaching approach of Key and Yellow Jackets offensive coach Geep Wade, as well as the proximity of Georgia Tech to his hometown, being just 21 miles away.
Georgia Tech's 2025 class now ranks at No. 26 in ESPN's team recruiting rankings, showcasing the program's commitment to building a formidable lineup. Key, drawing from his offensive line background, has assembled a strong group of blockers, with Petty leading the way alongside Ajidahun and Hasenhuetl.
Looking forward, Georgia Tech remains in the running for highly regarded in-state defensive tackle Christian Garrett, who recently decommitted from Georgia. The Yellow Jackets are hopeful of adding more talent to their potentially historic 2025 class before the early signing period takes place.
Georgia Tech's capture of Josh Petty, an elite offensive tackle, signifies the program's growing prominence in the college football landscape. With a foundation of top-rated recruits, the Yellow Jackets are poised to make waves in the ACC and beyond in the years to come.
