In a shocking turn of events, a Georgia father has been sentenced to 50 years in prison for intentionally poisoning his 18-day-old daughter with breastmilk mixed with antifreeze. The incident, which occurred four years ago, came to light when the child fell critically ill and tested positive for ethylene glycol, a chemical found in antifreeze.
The culprit, identified as Curtis Jack, was arrested on October 16, 2020, after the infant's health deteriorated. Investigators revealed that Jack had collected bottles of breastmilk from the child's mother two weeks prior, while she was at the hospital recovering from childbirth. Jack then delivered the breastmilk to the child's grandmother, who was caring for the woman's other daughter as well.
Tragically, the infant became severely ill within 24 hours of consuming the breastmilk, leading investigators to suspect foul play. In a statement on social media, the South Fulton Police Department confirmed that Jack confessed to adding antifreeze to the milk when questioned by detectives.
During the trial, the State presented testimonies from the child's mother, grandmother, law enforcement officers, and medical experts, who demonstrated the ease of poisoning breastmilk. As revealed in court, Jack's motive behind the heinous act was to avoid paying child support.
Automotive antifreeze, even in small amounts, is highly toxic, according to poisonhelp.org. Symptoms of ingestion can include drowsiness, vomiting, kidney damage, and even death. However, the child's mother declined to address the media following Jack's sentencing, but did mention that the child is currently doing well.
The sentencing of 50 years serves as a stern message that such acts of intentional harm towards innocent children will not be tolerated. The case sheds light on the importance of vigilance and caution when it comes to caring for vulnerable infants.
