Georgia Sheriff's Deputy Fatally Shot While Responding to Domestic Dispute

In a tragic incident, a Georgia sheriff's deputy lost his life after being shot while responding to a reported domestic dispute in Hiram, Georgia. The incident occurred on Saturday evening when two deputies arrived at the scene, only to be ambushed by a suspect who later took his own life.

According to Major Ashley Henson of the Paulding County Sheriff's Office, the deputies were fired upon as soon as they approached the home in a subdivision in Hiram. The male suspect unleashed a hail of bullets at the officers, resulting in one deputy, identified as 30-year-old Brandon Cunningham, sustaining a gunshot wound. Sadly, Deputy Cunningham succumbed to his injuries after being rushed to a nearby hospital.

Sheriff Gary Gulledge expressed his devastation over the loss, stating, "Tonight, we've lost a hero." He acknowledged the difficult period ahead for the entire department, saying, "It's going to be a tough time for all of us and all of our guys."

The suspect, whose identity has not been released at this time, was later found deceased, with what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to Major Henson. She also mentioned that the suspect had shot and injured herself, and she was transported to an Atlanta-area hospital where she is currently in stable condition.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation will be overseeing the investigation into the incident, with Major Henson clarifying that it is unclear whether any of the officers returned fire during the incident. "Unfortunately, it appears as if our deputies were ambushed," she said.

Major Henson described the shooting as a "tremendously tragic situation," emphasizing that the Paulding County Sheriff's Office had never before lost an officer in the line of duty. "Our hearts are broken," she added. "You see us holding it together, but there are going to be, there is already heartache, there is already tears."
