Russian energy giant Gazprom has inked a memorandum with the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) to provide Russian pipeline gas to Iran, according to an announcement made on Wednesday. The details of the memorandum, signed during Gazprom's head Alexei Miller's visit to Iran, were not disclosed.

Iran, home to the world's second-largest gas reserves after Russia, has been a coveted market for Moscow in its quest to expand its natural gas business. However, the development of Iran's gas exports has been impeded by U.S. sanctions, which have hindered the country's access to technology.

Gazprom, on the other hand, has faced challenges in its gas supplies to Europe, which once accounted for two-thirds of its gas sales revenue. The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has led to a severe decline in Gazprom's gas supplies to Europe, resulting in significant financial losses. Last year, the company incurred losses of nearly $7 billion, marking its first annual loss since 1999.

In July 2022, Gazprom signed a memorandum of understanding with the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) worth approximately $40 billion. However, no concrete deals have materialized from that agreement. As per the terms of the memorandum, Gazprom was expected to assist NIOC in the development of the Kish and North Pars gas fields, six oil fields, as well as participate in the completion of liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects and the construction of gas export pipelines.

The newly signed memorandum for the supply of Russian pipeline gas to Iran strengthens the energy cooperation between Gazprom and NIGC. It comes as a potential boost to Iran's gas industry, while offering Gazprom an opportunity to expand its presence in the region. The specifics of the agreement are yet to be disclosed, but it signifies a step forward in the collaboration between the two energy giants.

Both Russia and Iran hold significant strategic positions in the global gas market, making this partnership a potentially lucrative endeavor if fully realized. The completion of concrete deals and the implementation of joint projects referred to in the memorandum of understanding between Gazprom and NIOC will be closely watched by industry experts and stakeholders alike.

The agreement between Gazprom and NIGC to supply Russian pipeline gas to Iran not only opens up avenues for increased energy cooperation but also presents an opportunity for economic growth and stability in both countries. As developments unfold, the impact of this partnership on the global gas market will become clearer.
