The Israeli military has ordered new evacuations in northern Gaza, sparking a fresh wave of civilian displacements as intense airstrikes continue to bombard the territory. In Jerusalem, a senior minister indicated that the conflict is far from over, with Israeli presence in Gaza expected to extend for years. Avi Dichter, a member of Israel's security cabinet, emphasized that Gaza will not pose a threat to Israel for as long as it takes to secure the region, suggesting that Israeli forces may remain in Gaza for an extended period.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) issued evacuation orders for the Shujaiya neighborhood after rockets were fired from within the densely populated district. Hamas’s armed wing claimed they targeted a military base over the border. Evacuation warnings were circulated through various channels, including social media and direct communication, instructing residents to move south for their safety. Consequently, families began fleeing their homes, with images on social media depicting hundreds leaving the area on donkey carts and rickshaws, while others, including children with backpacks, walked on foot.
The situation in northern Gaza has been described as apocalyptic by humanitarian officials, with severe shortages of water, sanitation, food, and medical supplies affecting tens of thousands. The IDF has blockaded three towns—Jabaliya, Beit Lahiya, and Beit Hanoun—since launching a major offensive aimed at preventing Hamas from regrouping. Dichter stated that the Israeli military still has significant operations to conduct, as Hamas continues to have new personnel and infrastructure in place.
A major objective of Israel’s offensive is to secure the release of hostages taken during Hamas attacks last October, which resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 people and the abduction of more than 250 hostages. Around half of the hostages have since been released, but about 100 remain, many of whom are presumed dead. A spokesperson for Hamas's armed wing reported that a female Israeli hostage has been killed in northern Gaza, though details on her identity and circumstances were not disclosed. The IDF is investigating the report, accusing Hamas of psychological terrorism.
The conflict has led to immense loss of life and displacement. Israel’s operations in Gaza have resulted in over 44,000 Palestinian deaths, predominantly civilians, and nearly all of the 2.3 million residents have been displaced at least once. Large sections of the territory have been decimated. Residents in northern Gaza fear a permanent depopulation to create a buffer zone, though Israel denies such intentions. Prominent IDF targets have included urban refugee camps, hospitals, and various infrastructure, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.
Meanwhile, hostilities between Hezbollah and Israel have escalated, with Hezbollah claiming to have attacked an Israeli naval base and launched successive waves of rockets into northern and central Israel. Clashes between Israeli soldiers and Hezbollah fighters were reported in south Lebanon, with fatalities and injuries on both sides. The Lebanese military condemned the strikes, calling them a direct affront to ceasefire efforts, as Israeli military operations in Lebanon continue amidst an already tense and complex regional conflict.
