### Fox News Host Fact-Checks Trump Over Kamala Harris Criticism During Interview
In a surprising turn of events, Fox News host Laura Ingraham fact-checked Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump during a live interview when he attempted to criticize Vice President Kamala Harris for her response to Hurricane Helene. The incident occurred on Saturday during an interview on "The Ingraham Angle," just ahead of Trump's rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
Trump had accused Harris of neglecting her duties related to the hurricane's aftermath, claiming she was attending fundraisers instead of focusing on the flood-stricken area of North Carolina. “She shouldn’t be at fundraisers. She's at fundraisers, and her teleprompter went off, and she didn’t do well with the teleprompter off,” Trump remarked. He further suggested that Harris's focus should have been on the distressed regions, adding, "North Carolina is bad, is so bad."
At this point, Ingraham interjected, correcting Trump by saying, "She was there today for three hours, I believe." The interview then shifted to concerns about whether Trump was politicizing the storm, a claim he denied.
Contrary to Trump's assertions, Harris was indeed in North Carolina that day as part of the federal emergency management response. On the other hand, Trump had visited a flood-affected area in Georgia but did so in a private capacity, without any official federal role.
The unexpected fact-check came from Ingraham, who is generally seen as a staunch Trump supporter. This move highlights a growing trend of fact-checking live remarks, something Trump and his campaign have resisted. Earlier this month, Steven Cheung, a spokesperson for Trump's campaign, revealed that the campaign declined a "60 Minutes" interview partially because of the show's insistence on live fact-checking.
The matter of live fact-checking has been a point of contention for Trump and other leading Republicans. During a recent presidential debate between Trump and Harris, moderators from ABC News fact-checked Trump on multiple occasions, notably addressing false claims about Haitians in Springfield, Ohio, and his repeated assertions that the 2020 election was stolen due to widespread voter fraud.
Furthermore, during a vice-presidential debate between Trump’s running mate, Ohio Senator JD Vance, and Harris’ running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, Vance made misleading statements about Haitian immigrants in Springfield. When the moderator corrected him, emphasizing that many Haitian immigrants had legal status, Vance retorted that fact-checking should not have been part of the debate rules.
Newsweek has reached out to the Trump campaign and Fox News for comments on the incident. In North Carolina, Trump continues to face severe criticism for making false statements about the federal response to Hurricane Helene, with detractors accusing him of undermining the efforts of local officials, the Biden administration, and FEMA for political gain.
