In a shocking turn of events, Alexander Morris, a member of the popular Motown group Four Tops, has filed a lawsuit against Ascension Macomb-Oakland hospital in Warren, Michigan, claiming racial discrimination and other misconduct during his visit in April 2023. Morris, who is Black, alleges that hospital staff restrained him and ordered a psychological exam, refusing to believe that he was a part of the iconic music group.
The incident unfolded when Morris sought medical attention for chest pain and breathing problems. However, hospital staff reportedly "wrongfully assumed" that he was mentally ill when he revealed his identity as a celebrity figure and disclosed his current security concerns regarding stalkers and fans.
Despite possessing identification that could have easily confirmed his identity as a singer, Morris claims that he was subjected to unjust treatment. He alleges that he was placed into a restraining jacket, falsely imprisoned, and deprived of his personal property.
According to the lawsuit, the hospital staff's skepticism persisted until a nurse finally recognized Morris as a member of the Four Tops. At that point, the scheduled psychological exam was canceled. In an attempt to apologize for the distress caused, the hospital offered Morris a $25 gift card, which he refused to accept.
The Four Tops, a renowned group that originated in the 1950s and delivered timeless hits like "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch)" and "It's The Same Old Song," received induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1990. Although Morris joined the group in 2019 and is not an original member, his contributions to the group are significant.
This incident gained public attention when Morris spoke out about it last year, expressing his frustration at being labeled as "insane or schizophrenic" after returning to his hometown of Detroit. The lawsuit seeks to hold the hospital accountable for racial discrimination and the mishandling of Morris's medical situation.
In response to the lawsuit, Ascension Macomb-Oakland hospital issued a statement expressing their commitment to honoring human dignity and acting with integrity and compassion for all individuals and the community. They stated that they do not condone racial discrimination in any form, but declined to comment further due to the pending litigation.
As this lawsuit unfolds, it raises important questions about racial bias in medical settings and the need for increased awareness and sensitivity towards individuals from diverse backgrounds. The hearing for Alexander Morris's case will be eagerly awaited to determine the outcome and address the allegations of discrimination and mistreatment.
