In a recent interview with Fox News Digital, former White House physician turned Republican lawmaker, Rep. Ronny Jackson of Texas, expressed his belief that President Joe Biden's mental fitness poses a threat to national security. Jackson's comments come in response to a report published by The Wall Street Journal, which featured interviews with 45 individuals who claimed that Biden has been exhibiting signs of cognitive decline.
Jackson, who previously served as the top White House physician for former Presidents Obama and Trump, as well as chief medical adviser for the latter, argued that Biden's alleged cognitive issues make him unfit for the role of commander-in-chief. He cited the Journal's report, which highlighted observations from congressional leaders and others who have interacted with Biden, stating that he "appears slower now" and experiences both good and bad moments.
While the White House and its allies have dismissed the report as a GOP-led hit piece, Jackson emphasized that the commentary included some Democrats who also expressed concerns about Biden's performance. He speculated that this could be the initial stage of a political coup against the 81-year-old president.
Jackson further revealed that he has sent five letters to the White House since Biden's inauguration, urging him to take a cognitive test and make the results public. However, all of his letters have gone unanswered. Expressing frustration, he stated that sending another letter at this point might not make a difference as they have been consistently ignored.
In response to Jackson's comments, White House spokesman Andrew Bates compared him to a character from "The Simpsons" known for questionable medical practices. Bates dismissed Jackson's concerns and cited testimonials from congressional Republicans, foreign leaders, and nonpartisan national-security experts, who praised Biden's leadership and legislative accomplishments.
It is worth noting that recent polls have indicated that Biden's age is a top concern among voters. A March poll conducted by The New York Times/Siena College revealed that 61% of respondents who voted for Biden in 2020 agreed with the statement, "Joe Biden is just too old to be an effective president."
The controversy surrounding Biden's mental fitness continues to be a point of contention between Republicans and Democrats. While some argue that it is a genuine national security issue, others dismiss it as a political tactic. As the debate rages on, the question of the president's cognitive abilities remains a topic of concern for many Americans.
