Former Representative Liz Cheney, a prominent Republican from Wyoming, has issued a stern warning to the Supreme Court, urging them to promptly address former President Donald Trump's claim of presidential immunity. Trump has sought to use this defense to shield himself from criminal and civil challenges, including his federal election interference case related to the January 6th Capitol riot.

Cheney, who served on the committee that investigated the riot in detail, highlighted the urgency of reaching a decision without delay in her opinion piece published in The New York Times. She emphasized that any delay in the trial could result in the public never hearing critical and historic evidence and potentially prevent the accountability of the individual most responsible for the events of January 6th.

The Supreme Court justices are set to hear oral arguments on Thursday to determine whether presidential immunity protects Trump from criminal charges for actions taken while in office. Cheney warned that a prolonged delay in the case, should Trump be re-elected, could lead to the firing of the special counsel, the dropping of all Jan. 6 cases, and the suppression of key grand jury testimony.

Drawing from her experience on the committee, Cheney emphasized the importance of a swift resolution, highlighting the months spent litigating privilege claims in order to gain access to White House records during the investigation. She urged the Supreme Court to recognize the reality of Trump's delay tactics and conclude that no immunity applies in this case.

These comments from Cheney come after Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to focus on his presidential immunity claim, with inflammatory posts targeting President Joe Biden. Trump asserted that taking away his presidential immunity would endanger the United States, claiming that it would be impossible for a president to properly function.

Amid the first week of his criminal hush money trial, Trump requested to be excused from attending Thursday's hearing on his presidential immunity defense. However, Judge Juan Merchan, overseeing the case in New York, denied his request, ensuring that the trial will proceed uninterrupted.

The outcome of the Supreme Court's ruling on presidential immunity will have significant implications for Trump's legal battles and potentially shape the future accountability of presidents for their actions while in office. Public attention remains focused on the development of this critical case.
