Former President Donald Trump has announced that he will be holding a press conference on Thursday at his Bedminster golf course, marking his second press event in a week. This comes as Trump's campaign continues to apply pressure on Vice President Kamala Harris, urging her to engage in more robust media interactions.
In a statement, communications director Steven Cheung criticized Harris for her lack of media engagement, stating, "It has been 24 days and Kamala Harris continues to duck and hide from the media -- no interviews and no press conferences since she announced."
Last week, Trump held a lengthy press conference at his Mar-a-Lago estate, addressing various topics including his recent attacks on Harris, immigration, and reproductive rights. During this event, Trump made several false claims, including denying the outcome of the 2020 election and exaggerating the crowd size at his rally prior to the U.S. Capitol attack.
The recent press conferences by Trump are part of his campaign strategy to draw contrasts between himself and Harris, often questioning her intelligence. He expressed his anticipation for debates, stating, "I look forward to the debates...to set the record straight."
The Harris campaign has been using Trump's press conferences as opportunities to highlight his inaccuracies and criticize some of his policy proposals. In response to Trump's Mar-a-Lago press conference, the Harris campaign issued a statement, stating, "Trump did the only thing he knows how to do -- he went out and lied, made up stories, mixed up dates, attacked the media, and, overall, reminded Americans that he is a deeply unwell man."
While Harris has been less accessible to the media compared to Trump, she has engaged with reporters during her campaign trail, holding small gaggles aboard Air Force Two and answering occasional shouted questions. Her campaign has also committed to conducting a sit-down interview before the end of the month.
Michael Tyler, communications director for the Harris-Walz campaign, emphasized their focus on direct engagement with voters, stating, "We will commit to directly engage with the voters that are actually gonna decide this election and that is gonna be complete with rallies, with sit-down interviews, with press conferences, with all the digital assets we have at our disposal."
Despite her limited availability for media interviews, Harris has spent the past week alongside her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, visiting battleground states. Meanwhile, Trump has recently visited Montana, supporting GOP Senate candidate Tim Sheehy, and is currently focusing on two battleground states: North Carolina for an economic speech and Pennsylvania for a planned rally.
