In the wake of an assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump at a Pennsylvania rally, the Republican National Convention (RNC) has commenced with a cloud of anxiety hanging over the events. However, both Trump and current President Joe Biden have called for national unity, signaling a rare moment of agreement between the two political figures.

In an interview with The Washington Examiner on Sunday, Trump revealed that he had decided to rewrite his planned RNC speech in favor of promoting unity. He discarded his original speech, which was described as a "humdinger," and expressed his belief that the current circumstances presented an opportunity to bring the country together.

Remarkably, Trump expressed his gratitude for surviving the close call and referred to it as a potential miracle. He shared that a doctor at the hospital had called his survival extraordinary. "I'm not supposed to be here, I'm supposed to be dead," Trump admitted. This near-death experience seems to have left a profound impact on the former president.

Former Fox News host Tucker Carlson, who maintains regular contact with Trump, noted that the incident had truly changed the former president. Carlson believed that Trump's shift towards a more conciliatory tone was real and attributed it to the assassination attempt.

Despite concerns over escalating tensions due to the attempted assassination, Trump affirmed that he would not alter his travel plans to Milwaukee for the RNC. In a post on Truth Social, his new social media platform, Trump emphasized that he would not allow the incident to dictate changes in scheduling or other aspects of his life.

Interestingly, while Trump appears to be positioning himself as a reconciler in the aftermath of the shooting, doubts remain about the long-term sustainability of his pivot. Trump's allies, as well as prominent Republican commentators, are reportedly trying to use the incident as a political weapon to silence criticism against him and his history of endorsing political violence.

The RNC has instructed speakers, excluding Trump, to avoid making changes to their convention speeches. The aim is to prevent an overwhelming number of speakers tackling the same topic. However, it is apparent that Trump holds the power to set the tone for the event, with the prevailing sentiment being to continue with "business as usual."

As the convention progresses, it remains to be seen if Trump's newfound focus on unity will endure or if he will revert to his previous habits. The RNC serves as a platform to showcase a united Republican front, but the aftermath of the assassination attempt poses a delicate challenge that may test the former president's resolve.
