In a historic trial in New York City, former President Donald Trump is facing felony charges related to a 2016 hush money payment made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels. This marks the first time in history that a former U.S. president has been tried on criminal charges.
During the trial, Prosecutor Josh Steinglass delivered a four-hour summation, emphasizing the timelines of the Karen McDougal and Stormy Daniels payoffs. Steinglass argued that Trump directed his then-attorney, Michael Cohen, to delay the payment to Daniels until after the 2016 election. The prosecutor questioned why Cohen would have taken such a risk without instructions from the defendant.
Judge Merchan reminded Steinglass to wrap up his closing argument by 8 p.m., as the jury had expressed a need to conclude proceedings by that time. Steinglass thanked the jury for their patience and continued to present evidence.
Highlighting Trump's reaction to Cohen's implication in the hush money scheme, Steinglass mentioned that the former president was "furious" and immediately launched a public attack. He showed a tweet by Trump, warning others against retaining Cohen's legal services.
Steinglass contended that these tweets were not only meant to punish Cohen but also served as a message to potential witnesses against Trump. They implied that cooperation would be rewarded while defiance would be met with consequences.
The prosecutor also pointed out that Trump filed a "vexatious and punitive lawsuit" against Cohen and a defamation suit against Stormy Daniels. These actions were presented as evidence of Trump's punitive measures against those who spoke out against him.
Throughout the trial, defense attorneys attempted to undermine Cohen's credibility, using his past statements defending Trump. Steinglass criticized this tactic, stating that Cohen had initially denied any wrongdoing and continued to lie on the defendant's behalf. He argued that using Cohen's lies against him was disingenuous when those lies were allegedly told at Trump's direction.
As objections were raised regarding the impact of Trump's tweets on Cohen's safety, Judge Merchan called for a recess.
The trial will continue as the prosecution presents its case against former President Trump. The outcome of this historic trial will have far-reaching implications for the future accountability of U.S. presidents.
