Former President Donald Trump made a triumphant return to Las Vegas on Friday, addressing a crowd of 6,000 supporters at The Expo at World Market Center. This marked Trump's first rally in Nevada since the attempted assassination, as well as President Joe Biden dropping out of the race and the highly-watched debate with Vice President Kamala Harris that garnered over 67 million viewers.
Trump's rally in Las Vegas was part of a brief campaign trip to the West, including a rally in Tucson, Arizona, the day before. He is also scheduled to hold two more rallies next week in Flint, Michigan, and Uniondale, New York.
During his nearly 90-minute speech, Trump delivered scathing criticisms of Vice President Harris, labelling her a radical leftist and a threat to democracy. He accused her of engaging in "word salad" and showcased clips of her flipping positions on guns and Medicare, punctuating his points with a mocking imitation of her repeated "Thank you."
Trump expressed grave concerns about the future of the country if it doesn't change course, warning that it could resemble Venezuela. He urged his supporters to rally together and vote to ensure a landslide victory.
The former president also touched on the topics of immigration and veterans' issues, painting a picture of veterans sleeping on the streets while luxurious hotels are filled with immigrants in the country illegally. This strong rhetoric resonated with his base, who cheered in agreement.
Turning his attention to taxes, Trump promised numerous tax cuts. He notably reiterated his support for eliminating taxes on tips, an idea he first proposed during a previous rally in Las Vegas in June. Trump also pledged an end to taxes on Social Security benefits and declared, "there will be no taxes on overtime."
Towards the end of his address, Trump handed the microphone over to U.S. Senate candidate Sam Brown, who emphasized the need for strong leadership on border security. This prompted the crowd to engage in a passionate chant of "fight, fight, fight" - a rallying cry that Trump himself has used in the aftermath of the recent attempt on his life.
However, not all of Trump's claims during the rally held up to scrutiny. He falsely asserted that Kamala Harris' running mate, Tim Walz, has advocated for the execution of babies after birth, a claim that has no basis in reality. The act of killing infants is illegal across all states.
Despite these fact-checking discrepancies, the rally served as a platform for Trump to energize his base, fiercely criticize his opponents, and outline his proposed policies, particularly on taxes. With this event behind him, the former president continues to tour the country, rallying support for his political agenda.
Overall, Friday's rally in Las Vegas showcased Trump's strong rhetoric, passionate supporters, and his commitment to making an impact on the political landscape ahead of future elections.
