Former President Donald Trump expressed his criticism of the New York justice system on Monday morning, as he prepared to appear in court in Manhattan for the 19th day of proceedings. Trump, who is facing charges related to alleged falsification of business records, took the opportunity to tout his campaign efforts in the historically blue state, expressing his belief in winning New York in the upcoming election cycle.
Reading an excerpt from legal expert and lawyer Alan Dershowitz, Trump declared, "The criminal justice system is on trial in New York," before adding, "I love this state. I love the people of the state. I'm running hard in New York." These remarks were made as Trump referenced other cases he has faced in New York and accused the court system of being corrupt.
The ongoing trial centers around Trump's former attorney, Michael Cohen, who is facing cross-examination regarding allegations that Trump made 34 falsified business records to hide a $130,000 payment to former adult film star Stormy Daniels prior to the 2016 election. Trump has consistently pleaded not guilty and maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings.
According to Trump's legal team, questioning with Cohen is expected to conclude early on Monday morning, with closing arguments potentially commencing as early as Tuesday. Trump expressed frustration about the court's earlier than usual start time, claiming it prevented him from fulfilling campaign obligations. He lamented, "I'm here instead of campaigning. As you know, I was supposed to be in a very different state this morning, and the judge actually decided to call it early."
Furthermore, Trump criticized the case as a political attack orchestrated by the Biden administration, stating, "It's an attack on [President Biden's] political opponent. That's all it is." He accused the prosecution of bringing up irrelevant issues and emphasized that no crime had been committed.
Trump's involvement in the trial has limited his ability to engage in campaign activities, as he is required to be in court four days a week unless granted exceptions by Judge Juan Merchan. Last month, Trump managed to hold a rally in deep blue New Jersey, where an estimated 80,000 supporters congregated on the beaches of Wildwood.
In a bid to maintain momentum, Trump plans to hold his next rally in the historically Democratic stronghold of the Bronx, marking his first campaign event in New York since 2016. The former president has also expressed interest in hosting a rally at Manhattan's iconic Madison Square Garden before the election.
As the trial progresses, the New York justice system faces scrutiny and political implications. Trump's fervent campaigning in the state suggests he believes victory is attainable despite its traditionally Democratic leanings. The outcome of the trial and its effect on public perception remains to be seen as the courtroom drama continues to unfold.
