In a significant addition to the University of Wisconsin's football program, longtime NFL coach Jack Del Rio has been appointed as a senior adviser to head coach Luke Fickell, according to a source aware of the development. The 61-year-old Del Rio, who recently served as the defensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders, brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the Badgers.

Having spent the past four seasons with the Commanders, Del Rio's departure from the NFL in November has opened up an opportunity for him to contribute to the college football ranks. His role as senior adviser will involve assisting both the offense and defense, providing input on personnel decisions, and being a valuable sounding board for head coach Luke Fickell's ideas.

Del Rio's successful coaching career spans over a decade in the NFL, during which he held prominent positions with the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Oakland Raiders, amassing a commendable record of 93-94. Before transitioning to coaching, Del Rio was a celebrated linebacker at USC, earning a place in the Trojans Hall of Fame and even making the Pro Bowl in 1994 during his 11-year playing career in the NFL.

The accomplished coach's past experiences also include serving as the defensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos and the Carolina Panthers. Del Rio's expertise extends beyond defense, as he previously worked as a linebackers coach for the Baltimore Ravens and the New Orleans Saints, where he initially started his coaching journey as an assistant strength coach.

Del Rio's connection with the University of Wisconsin extends beyond his appointment as senior adviser. In recent months, he visited various college football programs, including Wisconsin and Washington, where his son, Luke, is a member of the staff. Through these visits, Del Rio had the opportunity to familiarize himself with the Badgers' program, making his transition into his new role smoother.

The appointment of Del Rio is expected to greatly benefit the University of Wisconsin's football program. With his wealth of knowledge and experience at the highest level of the sport, the Badgers aim to build on their 7-6 record from last year and make significant strides under the guidance of head coach Luke Fickell and the invaluable advice and support of Jack Del Rio.
