Connor Stalions, a former staffer at the University of Michigan, has assumed the role of acting coach at Detroit Mumford High School following the head coach's recent health setback. Stalions, who had been serving as a volunteer defensive coordinator for the Mustangs, took charge last week after head coach William McMichael experienced a mild stroke.
In his text message to CBS Sports, McMichael confirmed that Stalions would be leading the team for tonight's game against Hamady High School. McMichael also mentioned that the timeline for his return to coaching remains unknown. Stalions, who had been volunteering as the defensive coordinator since Memorial Day, has now stepped up to guide the team through this challenging period.
Detroit Mumford High School's football program has faced significant struggles, with a record of 4-24 since the start of the 2022 season. Stalions' appointment brings hope for a turnaround, as the team aims to improve its performance and regain its footing.
However, Stalions's involvement in an ongoing NCAA investigation has raised eyebrows. Accused of being part of an elaborate advance scouting scheme related to Michigan's opponents, Stalions resigned from his position at the university last November and their official notice of allegations arrived just ten days ago.
Despite the controversies surrounding him, Stalions remains focused on his coaching duties at Mumford. He recently led the team through three hours of practice and meetings ahead of their upcoming game. With only 30 players dressed out for practice, Stalions emphasized the importance of keeping the players motivated and committed.
Looking ahead, Stalions still harbors aspirations of becoming the head coach at Michigan one day. When asked about the possibility of becoming a college head coach in the future, he expressed hope for such an opportunity.
As Coach Stalions takes the helm at Detroit Mumford High School on an interim basis, the team and the community rally behind him. They are eager to witness the positive impact he can bring to the football program and guide the young players towards success both on and off the field. The upcoming game against Hamady High School will serve as the first test of Stalions' leadership and his ability to ignite a spark within the team.
