In a surprising political move, Gloria Romero, a former Democratic leader and self-proclaimed "true-blue Democrat," has officially joined the Republican Party. Romero, who served as a DNC delegate, former Democratic leader of the California State Senate, and former state re-election chair for President Barack Obama's campaign, announced her decision after being inspired by Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s endorsement of President Trump.
"When I saw RFK [Jr.] say, 'You know what? I am leaving the party. I am going to support Trump,' I said I'm going to join him and support President Trump as well," Romero stated. Explaining her departure, she expressed feeling abandoned by the Democratic Party, stating that it no longer aligns with her values.
Romero outlined various reasons behind her decision, including what she perceives as "lawfare" against former President Trump and the Democrats' alleged denial of educational opportunities for low-income children. In a recent op-ed published in the New York Post, she also criticized Vice President Kamala Harris's tenure as California attorney general, labeling it as "unimpressive" and accusing her of a "manipulated rise" within the ranks of the Democratic Party.
The former Democratic leader expressed concerns about what she described as the party's embrace of authoritarianism and censorship. In her op-ed, she cited Ronald Reagan's warning that fascism could come to America in the form of liberalism, and she claimed to have witnessed individual freedoms being stifled and suppressed.
Romero also voiced her opposition to the Democratic Party's stance on issues such as gender identity and abortion, stating her discomfort with the party's inability to define what constitutes a woman and its support for "abortion till birth."
Regarding the party's policies, she lamented that it had strayed too far to the left, abandoning key allies like Israel. Romero even went so far as to accuse certain members of the Democratic Party of aligning with what she called the "Hamas caucus," in an attempt to win over swing states.
According to Romero, the Republican Party, under the leadership of Donald Trump, represents the values and agenda that she believes are in the best interest of the country, its citizens, and future generations. She emphasized the party's commitment to national security, including securing the border.
With her decision to switch parties, Romero adds to the growing list of Democrats who have found themselves disillusioned and alienated by what they perceive as a radical shift within the Democratic Party. The move highlights the ongoing struggle within the party to balance progressive ideologies with more moderate policies, as prominent figures find themselves aligning with a Republican agenda they believe better represents their core principles.
It remains to be seen what impact Romero's endorsement of the GOP will have on the political landscape and how her party switch will resonate among fellow Democrats. As the nation moves forward, the divisions within the Democratic Party continue to widen, highlighting a turbulent period of change and realignment within the political sphere.
