Former Attorney General Bill Barr expressed his strong condemnation of China's involvement in driving and incentivizing the production and distribution of fentanyl, a deadly drug responsible for the opioid crisis in the United States. Barr's remarks came in response to a bipartisan report that shed light on China's complicity in fueling and profiting off the epidemic.
During his testimony before Congress, Barr addressed the scathing report, stating that China's actions were not driven by good faith. He referred to the Chinese government as being "knee-deep" in the crisis and actively participating in its proliferation.
The report highlighted that the People's Republic of China (PRC), under the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), offers tax rebates and grants to companies that manufacture fentanyl and synthetic drug precursors. These incentives are granted on the condition that the drugs are sold outside of China.
According to Representative Mike Gallagher, the Republican chairman of the special House committee, China's actions indicate a desire for increased fentanyl entering the United States, contributing to chaos and devastation caused by the epidemic. The report further revealed that the Chinese government has ownership stakes in several companies linked to drug trafficking.
Additionally, the committee found evidence that the Chinese government impeded investigations into illicit drug manufacturers by alerting them to formal requests for assistance sent by U.S. law enforcement. The PRC has also failed to prosecute fentanyl and precursor manufacturers, and no evidence of new criminal enforcement actions by China was discovered.
Barr expressed his belief that China's involvement in the drug crisis is aimed at weakening the United States. He underscored the need for a tougher stance against both China and Mexico, as they are complicit in the trafficking of fentanyl. Barr further stated that this issue will be significant in the upcoming November elections.
The role of China in the fentanyl crisis continues to be a matter of concern for authorities and policymakers. The report's findings shed light on the complicity of Chinese entities and the motivation behind their actions, indicating a need for stronger measures to address this grave issue.
