This ruling concludes a three-year investigation by the NHTSA, which began in 2020 after numerous drivers reported issues with their rearview cameras displaying blank screens.
The NHTSA determined that Ford violated federal regulations requiring automakers to promptly notify the agency of any vehicle defects and to submit quarterly progress reports on recalls. The agency's consent order criticized Ford for not issuing a "timely recall" and failing to provide the required updates. This penalty ranks as one of the largest in the NHTSA's 54-year history, second only to the penalty imposed on the now-bankrupt airbag maker Takata.
The affected recall covers a range of models, including the 2020 Ford Edge, Escape, Expedition, Explorer, F-150, Mustang, Ranger, and Transit, as well as Lincoln Corsair and Nautilus. While no injuries or fatalities have been linked to this recall, Ford's quality communications manager Maria Buczkowski stated that the company would cooperate with the NHTSA to address the issue.
Under the terms of the penalty, Ford is required to pay an immediate $65 million upfront. Another $55 million could be imposed based on Ford's compliance with the consent order over the next three years. Additionally, $45 million of the penalty must be directed towards investments in advanced data tools and a new testing facility for rearview camera components. Ford will meet with the NHTSA quarterly to ensure adherence to these terms.
Ford is also tasked with reviewing recent recalls to confirm that all potentially affected vehicles were included and to issue new recalls if necessary. An independent third party will be appointed to provide recommendations and confirm Ford’s compliance with recall regulations.
NHTSA Deputy Administrator Sophie Shulman emphasized the importance of timely and accurate recalls in maintaining road safety, reaffirming the agency's commitment to ensuring manufacturers like Ford adhere to safety laws. Vehicle owners can verify if their vehicle is under recall by entering their Vehicle Identification Number on Ford's website.
