### Carl DeMaio's Ascent to California Assembly Brings Trump Agenda to the Forefront

In a surprising turn of events, conservative activist and former San Diego city councilmember Carl DeMaio has secured a seat in the California Assembly, defeating fellow Republican Andrew Hayes. DeMaio’s victory signifies a potentially major shift in the state’s political landscape, particularly in Northern San Diego County, where he will be taking over from outgoing GOP state Rep. Marie Waldron.

DeMaio’s election marks the entry of a staunch Trump supporter into California’s legislative body. "I'm going to be pushing the Republican Party in a whole different direction when it comes to environmental issues, housing issues, social issues," DeMaio stated in an interview. Highlighting his ambitions, he mentioned, "If we want to be a majority in California, which is absolutely possible, we have to transform."

For years, state Republican leaders have distanced themselves from Trump, hoping a moderate stance would appeal to California's predominantly liberal electorate. This strategy was evident in Steve Garvey's recent Senate run against Adam Schiff, where Garvey even hinted at voting for President Joe Biden to avoid associating with Trump. However, political dynamics seem to be shifting now that Trump has secured another term, leading figures like Assembly Minority Leader James Gallagher to seek Trump’s help on enduring California issues.

DeMaio’s campaign capitalized on Trump’s firm immigration policies, running advertisements in favor of measures like the controversial 1994 ballot initiative that aimed to deny public services to undocumented immigrants. His controversial stances have won him both fervent supporters and staunch opponents. Labor unions, particularly firefighter and police unions, have long opposed DeMaio due to his efforts to cut public pensions and salaries during his tenure in San Diego.

Prominent GOP entities and figures such as Rep. Darrell Issa supported Hayes against DeMaio. The California Labor Federation, typically focused only on critical battlegrounds, intervened specifically to oppose DeMaio, with President Lorena Gonzalez commenting, "We just really disliked [DeMaio] and wanted to give him a pound of flesh rather than give him a free ride."

Despite this opposition, DeMaio plans to aggressively push his agenda, aligning closely with the Trump administration. He intends to hire staff to engage directly with federal authorities and hopes for strict actions on California’s homelessness policies. DeMaio is also planning a trip to Washington to discuss issues such as border policy and pollution from the Tijuana River, aiming to hold California accountable for misused funds.

Furthermore, DeMaio envisions creating a "Reform Caucus," inspired by his policy group Reform California, to counter the Democratic majority in Sacramento. He has already garnered interest from Assemblymember Bill Essayli, who shares a reputation for challenging Democratic policies.

As DeMaio prepares to enter the California Assembly, his proponents and critics alike are bracing for the impact of his audacious Trump-aligned strategies on the state's political environment.
