In honor of Peace Officers Memorial Day, both the American flag and the State of Illinois flag will be flying at half-staff on Wednesday, May 15. This annual remembrance, designated by federal law, pays tribute to the brave local, state, and federal peace officers who have either lost their lives or been disabled in the line of duty.

The White House issued a proclamation statement recognizing the courage of the nation's police officers on this solemn day. They also expressed gratitude for the fallen heroes, emphasizing that their ultimate sacrifice can never be repaid.

According to Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker's office, the flags will remain at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Wednesday. This gesture symbolizes the respect and gratitude that the state holds for these dedicated officers.

Peace Officers Memorial Day is one of two federal observances that require American flags to be lowered to half-staff. The other observance is Memorial Day, which pays tribute to the fallen military service members.

The origins of this annual event can be traced back to 1962 when President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation designating May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which it falls as Police Week. Since then, it has served as a time for reflection and remembrance.

The statistics regarding the dangers faced by law enforcement officers highlight the significance of this day. According to the FBI, 60 officers lost their lives in the line of duty last year alone. Additionally, as of April 29, this year has already seen 19 law enforcement officers killed and 21 others who have died in job-related accidents, as per the latest data from the bureau.

FBI Director Christopher Wray also released a statement in support of Police Week, acknowledging the importance of recognizing and expressing gratitude to the courageous men and women who selflessly put others before themselves, regardless of the cost.

As the flags fly at half-staff on Peace Officers Memorial Day, communities across the nation join together to honor and remember the sacrifices made by these dedicated peace officers. It is a time to reflect on their bravery and to express gratitude for their service to ensure the safety of our communities.
