**First Deputy Mayor Sheena Wright Expected to Resign Amid Growing Exodus from Adams' Administration**
New York City’s First Deputy Mayor Sheena Wright is anticipated to step down from her role, sources revealed to PIX11 News. Wright reportedly informed her colleagues of her intention to resign due to dissatisfaction with the treatment of her husband, Schools Chancellor David Banks, who felt marginalized. City Hall has yet to disclose who will succeed her.
Wright's resignation adds to the expanding list of key officials from Mayor Eric Adams’ administration who have recently exited. Schools Chancellor David Banks is also set to leave his post on October 16. In a notable incident, federal authorities raided the home of Wright and Banks in September, as well as the home of David Banks' brother, Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Philip Banks. These raids are reportedly unrelated to the criminal charges that Mayor Adams faces concerning his 2023 mayoral campaign.
Serving in the Adams administration since 2022, Sheena Wright ascended to the position of first deputy mayor in 2023. Prior to her tenure in the city government, she was the CEO of the nonprofit organization United Way of New York City.
Mayor Adams is currently embroiled in a legal battle, having been charged with taking bribes and illegal campaign contributions from Turkish entities and businessmen. He has pleaded not guilty, though federal prosecutors indicated that he and others in his administration might face additional charges.
In a discreet move last week, Mayor Adams issued an executive order revising the line of succession for the first deputy mayor. The order states that if the first deputy mayor is incapacitated, the deputy mayor for health and human services would assume their duties. However, should the mayor need to resign or is removed by the governor, the public advocate would step into his role, followed by the comptroller.
