In the midst of summer celebrations, the Des Moines Police Department has reported a significant increase in both fireworks complaints and citations. According to a spokesperson for the department, between 6 p.m. on July 1 and 6 a.m. on July 5, they received a staggering 2,848 calls for service, with 721 of them being fireworks-related complaints. This marks a notable rise from the same time period last year, when the department recorded 672 complaints.
To address the issue, the Des Moines Police Department established a dedicated fireworks response team this summer, consisting of six officers who were specifically tasked with patrolling for fireworks-related incidents. Their presence has resulted in a substantial increase in the number of fireworks citations issued this year. Since June 20, the department has already issued 52 citations, a substantial surge compared to the mere 11 citations handed out during the same period in 2020.
One such individual who found themselves on the wrong side of the law was 45-year-old Aaron Haskin, a resident of Des Moines. Haskin was cited for unlawfully setting off fireworks and exacerbating the situation by leaving fireworks debris in the street, which ultimately led to a fire. Additionally, Haskin faced charges of littering and interference with official acts after he initially refused to identify himself and subsequently provided false information to the authorities.
Des Moines officials have also taken steps to address the issue of illegal fireworks use. While consumer fireworks can still be legally sold within the city limits, their use is strictly prohibited. Moreover, city officials have decided to lower fines for illegal fireworks usage from $625 to $200 in an effort to deter unlawful activities.
With fireworks season in full swing, the Des Moines Police Department urges residents to celebrate responsibly and respect the local regulations regarding fireworks use. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, striving to maintain public safety and uphold community standards.
As the summer festivities continue, it is crucial for the community to exercise caution and adhere to legal guidelines to ensure a joyful and safe season for all.
