Federal Regulators Rule Amazon Must Notify Customers of and Remove Dangerous Products

Federal regulators have issued a ruling on Tuesday requiring Amazon to inform customers about and eliminate products identified as hazardous, even if they were initially sold by third-party sellers on the platform. The Consumer Product Safety Commission asserted that Amazon bears legal responsibility as a "distributor" and must take action to recall affected items. More than 400,000 products, including faulty carbon monoxide alarms and potentially flammable children's pajamas and hair dryers, are implicated in the ruling. Despite having already removed and notified customers about many of these products, Amazon plans to appeal the commission's decision. In response to the ruling, Amazon must develop and submit plans outlining how it will alert purchasers and the public about future product dangers, as well as provide refunds or replacements for the affected items. Amazon's spokesperson expressed disappointment in the decision but mentioned the company's proactive measures to prevent unsafe products and continuous monitoring of listings on its platform. Additionally, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently sent a warning letter to Amazon regarding the distribution of chemical peel drug products that violated federal regulations.
