In a surprising turn of events, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) conducted raids on the homes of David Duong and Andy Duong, the owners of California Waste Solutions, a curbside recycling contractor in Oakland. While the exact reason for the raid remains unknown, it is believed to be related to alleged political money laundering.

The Duong family, known for their long-standing involvement in politics, has been under investigation by the California Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC) and the Oakland Public Ethics Commission since 2019. These investigations aim to determine whether the family illegally channeled substantial amounts of money to local politicians, using "straw donors" to conceal the true origin of the funds.

Although the investigations by the FPPC and the Oakland Public Ethics Commission are yet to be completed, it remains uncertain whether the Duongs will face any official charges or penalties.

Over the years, both David Duong and his son, Andy Duong, have made significant contributions to political candidates at both federal and state levels. While they have been generous supporters of California's Democratic Party, their political spending has not been limited to one party. The family has also made substantial donations to the Republican Party and candidates like Donald Trump.

David Duong's political contributions began with a modest $500 check to Leo T. McCarthy, the then-lieutenant governor of California, during his U.S. Senate campaign in 1988. However, as his recycling company, CoGiDo, grew in San Francisco, his political giving increased substantially. By the late 2000s, Duong was contributing tens of thousands of dollars annually to candidates for federal office, with Democrats being among the primary beneficiaries.

More recently, David Duong's political donations have shifted towards the Republican Party. In 2020, he donated over $250,000 to the Trump Victory political action committee. Additionally, he contributed $155,000 to a Republican PAC supporting multiple GOP House of Representatives candidates in 2022.

Meanwhile, Andy Duong has contributed $30,000 since 2012 to candidates for federal office. Notably, he donated $10,000 to committees supporting Barack Obama and provided $7,200 to Congressman Eric Swalwell's campaigns over the past decade.

At the state level, the Duong family has also shown significant support for California's leading Democrats. Their donations have benefited numerous candidates for state assembly, state senate, and governor, including former Governor Jerry Brown, who received $10,000 for his 2010 campaign. Kamala Harris, in her campaign for attorney general in 2010, also received $11,500 from the Duongs.

California Waste Solutions and the Duong family have additionally sponsored various events and held celebrations where they have honored influential politicians. Notable attendees at these events have included figures such as California Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon, Attorney General Rob Bonta, and Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao.

The recent FBI raids on the Duong family's homes have cast a shadow of uncertainty over their extensive political involvement. As investigations continue, the true extent of their alleged political money laundering practices will become clearer. The FPPC and the Oakland Public Ethics Commission are expected to release their findings in due course.
