In a significant development, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has joined the ongoing federal investigation into the Key Bridge collapse that occurred on March 24th. The FBI's involvement indicates that there is suspicion or evidence of a crime related to the incident, which resulted in the tragic loss of lives and significant damage.

The investigation is being led by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), whose primary focus is to determine the probable cause of the accident and make recommendations to prevent similar incidents in the future. However, the FBI's involvement sets it apart from the NTSB's investigation, as its primary goal is to seek accountability and potentially determine any criminal liability.

The FBI's spokesperson declined to comment further on the investigation, and Maryland U.S. Attorney, Erek Barron, stated that his office does not confirm ongoing investigations. However, Barron emphasized that accountability will be sought for any individuals or entities found responsible for the tragedy, regardless of the nature of the offense.

Former U.S. Deputy Attorney General and U.S. Attorney for Maryland, Rod Rosenstein, explained that a federal search warrant was likely involved, as federal judges have to authorize such warrants based on probable cause. Rosenstein highlighted that the goal of the federal investigation is to determine the cause of the bridge collapse and ascertain if there is any criminal liability on the part of the crew, the ship-owning companies, or other entities involved, such as fuel suppliers.

The involvement of the FBI indicates that the investigation may extend beyond assessing the probable cause and could delve into potentially harmful actions or negligence that could have led to the accident. The FBI's expertise and authority will enable them to take the necessary measures to collect evidence and enforce relevant legal actions if required.

The FBI's presence at the accident site, alongside the NTSB and Coast Guard, during the initial days following the collapse, indicates the seriousness and urgency of the investigation. While there is no evidence suggesting terrorism as a cause of the collapse, the FBI's involvement showcases the gravity of the situation.

As investigations continue, Maryland officials and the administration of President Joe Biden have pledged to hold accountable anyone found culpable for the bridge collapse. The companies involved, Synergy Marine Pte Ltd. and Grace Ocean Private Ltd., both based in Singapore, have previously sought to limit their liability or absolve themselves of any responsibility through legal proceedings.

The NTSB's preliminary report, which will provide factual findings surrounding the accident and its aftermath, is expected to be released in the first week of May. However, it could take up to two years for the final report to be completed.

While rare, the involvement of the FBI in such investigations is not unheard of, as they have previously worked alongside NTSB investigators in cases involving various maritime incidents. The outcome of their collaboration could potentially lead to criminal charges against individuals or companies responsible for negligent actions or violations of maritime laws.

As the federal investigation progresses, more information is likely to emerge regarding potential factors that could have contributed to the tragic collapse of the Key Bridge. The FBI's involvement signifies a crucial step towards seeking justice for the victims and holding accountable those responsible for this devastating incident. This article will be updated as new information becomes available.
