In a shocking turn of events, the FBI continues its search for a motive and clues in the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump. The incident took place during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday evening, where the former president was wounded, one rallygoer was killed, and two others were critically injured.

The rifle used in the attempted assassination was legally purchased by the gunman's father in 2013, according to federal investigators. The 20-year-old gunman, identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, purchased 50 rounds of ammunition on the morning of the shooting, as revealed by an anonymous source familiar with the investigation.

On Monday, the FBI announced that they had successfully accessed the data on Crooks' cell phone but were still working on determining his motive. The agency is currently analyzing his electronic devices for further information. Authorities believe that Crooks acted alone in the shooting and have not identified any political ideology that may have motivated the attack.

President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were briefed on the incident on Monday morning by senior law enforcement and security officials, including FBI Director Christopher A. Wray, Attorney General Merrick Garland, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, and Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle. The Secret Service is facing questions regarding how Crooks managed to get on the roof of a building outside the rally's security perimeter and open fire.

Crooks, who graduated with an associate's degree in engineering science from the Community College of Allegheny County in May, lived in a small one-story brick home. He was a member of the Clairton Sportsmen's Club, a shooting club in Clairton, Pennsylvania, according to the club's lawyer.

Corey Comperatore, a 50-year-old engineer and father of two, was tragically killed during the shooting while trying to protect his family. The two other rally attendees critically injured were identified as David Dutch and James Copenhaver.

The community college expressed relief that Trump was safe and offered condolences to the Comperatore family. Meanwhile, the FBI is seeking more clues to understand why Crooks decided to open fire at the rally.

The Secret Service is currently under scrutiny for its security breach and is being pressed to determine if sufficient resources were allocated for Trump's protection. Additionally, the incident has sparked different reactions from world leaders, potential Trump vice presidential candidates, and Republican lawmakers. While President Biden, Democrats, and Republicans condemned the violence, some top allies of Trump swiftly accused Biden and his supporters of using rhetoric that led to the shooting.

In the aftermath of the incident, social media and other platforms have been flooded with unsubstantiated theories, fueling false and conflicting narratives.

As the investigation unfolds, the FBI remains committed to uncovering the motive behind this assassination attempt and bringing justice to those affected by this tragic incident.
