In a press conference held on Wednesday, FBI officials disclosed new details about the foiled assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump last month. The investigation revealed that the shooter, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, had conducted searches for information on both the Republican and Democratic National Conventions. However, FBI authorities stated that they found no evidence of any co-conspirators involved in the attack.
FBI Assistant Director Bobby Wells emphasized that there was no indication to suggest that Crooks was directed by a foreign entity to carry out the assault. While Crooks had researched campaign events for both Trump and then-presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden, investigators could not identify a definitive ideology associated with him.
Speaking at the press conference, FBI special agent Kevin Rojek highlighted Crooks' diligent efforts to plan the attack, noting that he had explored various events and potential targets before focusing on the Trump rally. The investigation revealed that Crooks had searched for the dates of the Democratic National Convention and the Republican National Convention in 2024, indicating his interest in both political spectrums.
Rojek added that the shooter's online content displayed a mixture of ideologies, making it challenging to draw conclusions about his political leanings. He also commended Crooks' family for their full cooperation during the investigation.
The shooting incident occurred on July 13 during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. A bullet narrowly missed Trump's head, striking him in the ear, while former fire chief Corey Comperatore, attending the event, tragically lost his life. The Secret Service swiftly reacted, shielding Trump and evacuating him to safety. Crooks was shot and killed by law enforcement moments later.
Following the incident, Kimberly Cheatle, the Secret Service's director at the time, resigned under the mounting pressure from lawmakers. Multiple undisclosed officials from the Secret Service have been placed on leave as an internal investigation unfolds regarding the planning of the rally.
Last week, Trump addressed a rally in Asheboro, North Carolina, where he delivered his speech from behind bulletproof glass. The FBI conducted a productive victim impact interview with the former president, providing him with an in-depth briefing on the ongoing investigation.
The FBI remains committed to uncovering the full extent of Crooks' motives and continues to examine the recovered evidence to determine any conclusive ideology associated with him.
