Milwaukee police officers reportedly shot and killed a person near 14th and Vliet streets, approximately 1.2 miles from Fiserv Forum, the main venue for the Republican National Convention (RNC). The incident occurred today, drawing a significant police presence, including the Secret Service, to the scene.

According to witnesses interviewed by WISN 12 News, the shooting followed a confrontation between two men in King Park. During the altercation, one of the men brandished a knife, prompting onlookers to call the authorities. The sudden influx of officers allegedly surprised the men involved in the fight. Unconfirmed reports indicate that multiple officers fired their weapons at the individual wielding the knife.

While the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner's Office has not yet confirmed their presence at the scene, several individuals have informed WISN 12 News that the person shot has tragically passed away.

Surprisingly, the officers involved in the shooting are not affiliated with the Milwaukee Police Department but rather hail from Columbus, Ohio. The Columbus Fraternal Order of Police has released a statement assuring the public that none of the officers were injured during the incident.

Notably, the shooting does not appear to be related to the ongoing RNC taking place in Milwaukee. Nonetheless, its close proximity to the main convention venue has heightened concerns and prompted inquiries from political officials. WISN 12 News Political Director Matt Smith spoke with Mayor Cavalier Johnson, who confirmed that he was being briefed on the situation.

As the investigation continues, sources from WISN 12 News reveal that the police line has been extended to 17th and Vliet streets, indicating an ongoing examination of the crime scene. WISN 12 News is actively covering the incident and working diligently to gather more information.

With police departments from 63 entities across 24 states, Washington, D.C., and 44 Wisconsin agencies present for the RNC, law enforcement cooperation is crucial in handling this situation and maintaining public safety.

Updates regarding the shooting will be reported as more information becomes available.
