Speaking to reporters onboard his plane after attending a summit in Budapest, Erdogan emphasized the potential for a peaceful resolution through dialogue and diplomacy, as quoted by Anadolu state news agency.
Erdogan underscored his belief that a solutions-based approach from the US administration could swiftly bring an end to the ongoing war in Ukraine. He cautioned that escalating the situation with more weapons and violence would only add to the chaos and conflict, whereas a diplomatic and negotiated approach could pave the way to peace.
Reflecting on his prior positive relationship with Donald Trump during his first term, Erdogan highlighted the importance of discussing the presence of US troops in northeastern Syria. He pointed out that these troops are currently aiding the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG), a group Ankara associates with terrorism due to its links with the banned Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).
Erdogan stressed that direct personal communication with Trump was effective in the past and expressed optimism about managing these sensitive issues through similar means moving forward. He noted his consistent and open line of communication with Trump, citing their close, 24-hour contact to pursue diplomatic results.
Turning his attention to the Middle East, Erdogan voiced his hopes that Trump would play a pivotal role in urging Israel to cease its aggressive actions. He suggested that the policies from the previous administration under Biden only deepened regional conflicts and proposed that halting arms supplies to Israel could be a crucial step towards resolving the wars in Gaza and Lebanon.
Moreover, Erdogan lauded Trump’s tenacious reelection campaign, acknowledging the challenges and pressures, including an alleged assassination attempt. He praised Trump's determination and resilience throughout the election process and congratulated him on his successful, spirited campaign.
