A political action committee (PAC) named End Citizens United has taken legal action by filing a complaint with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) against former President Donald Trump. The complaint alleges that Trump's recent two-hour live interview with Elon Musk on X, formerly known as Twitter, constitutes as a virtual campaign event funded by X, which would be in violation of federal law.
The PAC, which is aligned with Democrats, argues that such an arrangement would be in breach of the Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971, which prohibits corporations from making contributions to political candidates and candidates from accepting such contributions. The complaint names Trump, his campaign treasurer Bradley T. Crate, and X as respondents.
The complaint emphasizes that according to federal law, any form of value provided to a candidate in connection with their election can be considered as a contribution. The resources utilized by X during the interview, such as dedicating real-time staff to address technical difficulties and hosting the event on their platform, are deemed significant in value and constitute as contributions to Trump's campaign.
The livestreamed conversation between Trump and Musk took place on Spaces on X, a tool designed for hosting live audio conversations. Despite generating millions of views, the conversation was delayed by 40 minutes due to technical glitches. During the interview, Musk expressed his support for Trump's campaign and advocated for his candidacy.
The complaint concludes by urging the FEC to take immediate action by investigating these violations, imposing fines on the respondents, and enjoining them from further breaches of the law. The FEC's investigation is expected to determine whether X's resources were utilized in compliance with the media exemption provided by law.
Tiffany Muller, President of End Citizens United, released a statement expressing her concerns about the alleged illegal corporate contribution to Trump's campaign. She emphasized the importance of upholding campaign finance laws and preventing corporations from directly engaging in campaigns without proper regulations in place. The FEC's investigation will determine whether Trump, his campaign, and X Corp. will be held accountable for these alleged violations.
