### Free Gas Provided to Floridians Impacted by Hurricane Milton
In the aftermath of Hurricane Milton, Floridians in the hardest-hit regions are still struggling to find gasoline. Residents either evacuating or refueling before the storm led to a scarcity of supplies. However, efforts have been made to replenish the fuel stocks with state assistance, and free gasoline is being provided in some of the most affected areas.
Governor Ron DeSantis announced at a press conference at Port Manatee on Monday that since the storm passed, 2,500 trucks have been deployed from Port Tampa Bay to distribute fuel to affected areas. "They've unloaded a total of 5 million gallons of fuel from Port Tampa. That's 2 million more than they would usually do over a similar period of time," he stated.
DeSantis also reported that in the Manatee area alone, over 300,000 gallons of gasoline and 60,000 gallons of diesel have been distributed, with more on the way. Over on the east coast, Port Canaveral has doubled its usual output by providing 12 million gallons of fuel since the hurricane struck.
While the state's role in deciding where gas is delivered is limited—being predominantly managed by private industry—the Florida Highway Patrol and local law enforcement have been instrumental in ensuring the safe delivery of fuel. "Over 100 tankers have been escorted just by Florida Highway Patrol since Milton made landfall," DeSantis noted, expressing gratitude for their efforts.
To support residents directly, Florida Disaster Emergency Management has set up 12 public fuel depot locations, where fuel is being provided for free. "We've actually opened up our own fuel sites over the weekend," said DeSantis. "Today, we have fuel for the public, not even charging you—free gas. Imagine that."
Residents can obtain up to 10 gallons of fuel per car at these depots. Most sites operate from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., with some locations open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. The free fuel depots are located in Arcadia, Bradenton, Largo, North Port, Plant City, Port Charlotte, Port Richey, Tampa, Tarpon Springs, and Wesley Chapel.
The provision of free gas has been made possible due to a budget surplus, illustrating the state's proactive measures in supporting its citizens during this challenging time.
