**Elon Musk Denounces Trump’s Policy Bill, Signals Growing Rift with Republicans**
In a surprising turn of events, tech mogul Elon Musk labeled a key Republican bill backing President Trump's domestic agenda a "disgusting abomination" in a series of posts on X, signaling a growing divide with the GOP. On Tuesday, Musk criticized the bill, accusing it of inflating the national deficit and calling for the removal of lawmakers who supported it.
Musk's outburst included resharing posts from Republican Senators Rand Paul and Mike Lee, both of whom have voiced their concerns over the increasing U.S. deficit. In his posts, the billionaire condemned the bill for being bloated and fiscally irresponsible. "I'm sorry, but I just can't stand it anymore," Musk wrote. He further stressed that the proposed legislation would massively increase the federal deficit and suggested it could bankrupt the nation.
While Musk did not single out any specific legislators, he hinted at supporting efforts to unseat those who voted for the bill in the 2026 midterms. His array of posts indicates a newfound freedom from aligning with the White House, a shift that follows his recent departure from his role leading the Department of Government Efficiency.
Historically, Musk hasn't shied away from leveraging his influence to critique legislation affecting his business interests. Notably, Trump's bill would eliminate subsidies and tax credits designed to promote electric vehicle purchases, which would directly impact Tesla, Musk's electric car company. This could explain Musk's fervent opposition.
House Speaker Mike Johnson expressed disappointment in Musk's critiques, noting that they conversed on Monday and that Musk seemed to grasp the merits of the proposed legislation. The White House also appeared taken aback by the posts, although there is no clear indication if President Trump will respond. Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, reaffirmed the administration's support for the bill, calling it "one big, beautiful bill."
The contentious bill, formally named the One Big, Beautiful Bill Act, aims to cut taxes significantly, with the most substantial benefits accruing to the wealthy. It also intends to boost military and immigration enforcement funding, partly financed by cuts to health, nutrition, education, and clean energy programs. Despite claims from White House officials and Speaker Johnson that the bill would reduce the national debt, independent analysts and the Congressional Budget Office project it would increase the deficit by more than $1 trillion.
The bill already passed the House on May 22 after intense lobbying by Trump, yet it faces revisions in the Senate. Fiscal conservatives are demanding further cuts, particularly to Medicaid, to address deficit concerns, despite Trump's warnings against altering Medicaid, a crucial program for many of his supporters.
Musk's recent departure from governmental duties has seemingly unshackled him, allowing him to criticize Trump's policies more openly. Previously, his involvement in government obligations appeared to restrict his outspoken nature, which he has now rekindled through his social media platform, X.
