### Elon Musk Pumps Millions into Trump Campaign's Ground Game, But Will It Pay Off?
In a bold move to influence the 2024 presidential election, tech magnate Elon Musk has funneled nearly $75 million into America PAC since July, making him one of Donald Trump's most significant financial backers this campaign season. The new super PAC, which has expended over $110 million primarily on voter turnout operations, is working closely with Trump's campaign, marking a significant shift allowed by recent Federal Election Commission (FEC) guidelines that permit close coordination between campaigns and outside groups.
Despite the influx of cash and resources, America PAC is racing against time to establish a comprehensive field program to supplement the Trump campaign’s leaner operation compared to 2020. This rushed approach has led to several challenges, including the replacement of initial vendors and persistent technical glitches with Campaign Sidekick, the app used for canvassing. This last-minute push aims to catch up with Vice President Kamala Harris’ robust turnout efforts, crucial as the race remains a tight contest in key battleground states.
Musk's strategy deviates from the usual heavy spending on TV ads, reflecting his skepticism of their efficacy. Instead, America PAC focuses on the ground game, a decision that aligns with Musk's preference for innovative approaches, as seen in his ventures like Tesla and SpaceX. However, building an extensive field operation is complex and time-consuming, requiring efficient hiring, training, and mobilization of staff to engage potential Trump voters through calls and door-to-door outreach.
The late start and operational hiccups have raised concerns among Republican strategists. While some appreciate the additional support from Musk's group, others worry that the delayed efforts and vendor switches might hamper Trump's chances. According to a senior Trump campaign aide, while the initiative may not be flawless, it still provides significant additional coverage.
In addition to logistical challenges, Musk's America PAC is leveraging unique tactics to boost voter registration in swing states. The group offers $47 to supporters for each voter they can register via petitions endorsing the First and Second Amendments. This workaround aims to legally incentivize voter registration in these critical states.
Funding disparities also highlight the uphill battle for the Trump campaign. Trump’s fundraising lags behind Harris, with her team raising significantly more in recent months and maintaining a much larger staff. While Trump’s campaign has a smaller operation by design, focusing on quality over quantity, the outcome of this strategy remains uncertain.
Musk's high-stakes involvement underscores his belief in Trump’s importance for America's future, as demonstrated in his public endorsements and speeches. As Election Day approaches, the effectiveness of this unconventional ground game will be pivotal in determining whether Musk's gamble pays off.
