In a surprising move that has left many puzzled, billionaire CEO Elon Musk recently endorsed former President Donald Trump and expressed hopes for his quick recovery after the attempted assassination. This endorsement has raised concerns about the future of Tesla, an electric vehicle (EV) company that Musk leads, as Trump has been known for his anti-EV stance.

Musk, who has built his legacy on pioneering renewable energy and shifting the world towards sustainable solutions, now finds himself backing a candidate who is seen as hindering efforts to combat climate change. Trump has repeatedly expressed skepticism towards EVs, calling them expensive, overweight, and impractical. He has even pledged to roll back investments in EV charging infrastructure and incentives, which could pose a unique threat to Tesla.

If Trump's plans to dismantle the Biden administration's Inflation Reduction Act are realized, it would impact Tesla's vehicle sales. Currently, consumers purchasing a new Tesla Model 3 or Model Y can benefit from a $7,500 tax credit, thanks to the EV tax credit introduced by President Biden. Used Teslas also qualify for a $4,000 tax credit, making the purchase price more affordable. However, if these incentives are eliminated, Tesla's sales may suffer further.

Tesla has already faced challenges this year, with rising competition leading to price cuts that have affected the company's profit margins. In the second quarter of 2024, Tesla's sales dropped by 6.3 percent, despite overall EV sales increasing by 7.3 percent, according to Kelley Blue Book. Therefore, supporting a candidate who opposes EVs could potentially compound the struggles the company is already facing.

Furthermore, Musk's support for Trump jeopardizes Tesla's position in the EV market. Trump's administration has faced criticism from House Republicans who have voted in favor of proposals to roll back the EV tax credit or eliminate the Inflation Reduction Act altogether. If Tesla's tax credits disappear, it may impact other automakers as well, but Tesla's existing global production facilities and EV charging network could help sustain its market position, especially if the competition's EVs become more expensive without the tax credits.

It is worth noting that Musk has been critical of EV tax credits in the past, arguing that the industry should not rely on government subsidies. However, it cannot be forgotten that Tesla itself received a crucial $475 million loan from the Department of Energy, which played a significant role in its survival and subsequent success. Musk's other ventures, such as SpaceX and Starlink, also heavily rely on government contracts.

Musk's relationship with Trump has been described as cordial, with the two reportedly having frequent phone conversations. Conversely, the Biden administration has shown a cooler reception towards Musk and Tesla, omitting them from White House events and keeping them at arm's length. The administration has also initiated investigations into Tesla's autonomous driving technology, potentially leading to charges of securities and wire fraud. Supporting Trump's bid for the White House might be Musk's attempt to offset these challenges.

While a Trump victory may bring short-term gains for Tesla, such as the removal of EV tax credits and investigations into self-driving claims, the long-term consequences could be detrimental. Tesla's mission of accelerating the world's transition to sustainable energy would face significant roadblocks, as Trump has consistently shown resistance towards renewable energy sources like solar and wind power. The strong ties between the Republican Party and the oil and gas industry also indicate a lack of commitment to a cleaner, more sustainable planet.

Elon Musk, who previously stated that he would avoid getting involved in politics, now finds himself entangled in a potentially risky gamble by endorsing Trump. The ramifications for Tesla and the renewable energy sector as a whole could be significant if Trump's anti-EV agenda gains traction. Only time will tell the impact of this endorsement on Tesla's future and the pursuit of a sustainable energy transition.
