In a surprising turn of events, Tesla CEO Elon Musk has changed his position on China tariffs, expressing his support for free trade and criticizing measures that inhibit the market. His comments came during his appearance at the Viva Technology Conference in Paris.

Just a few months ago in January, Musk voiced concerns about Chinese automakers potentially dominating the global market and suggested the need for trade barriers to protect domestic companies. However, his recent remarks indicate a complete reversal of his stance.

Musk revealed his surprise at the Biden Administration's decision to enforce tariffs, highlighting that neither Tesla nor himself had requested such measures. He emphasized that restrictions on a foreign country's ability to conduct business in other regions are disadvantageous for the overall market.

Tesla has been successfully competing in the Chinese market without the benefit of tariffs or deferential support. Musk argued that limiting freedom of exchange and distorting the market ultimately do more harm than good.

The Biden Administration's tariff program, introduced in mid-May, imposes a 100 percent rate on electric vehicles (EVs) from China, while other sectors face lesser impacts. The program is aimed at protecting American workers and businesses, affecting around $18 billion worth of Chinese products, as reported by The Washington Post.

This is not the first time Elon Musk has weighed in on tariff programs between the United States and China. In April 2018, he hailed China's decision to reduce import tariffs, deeming it a crucial step to avoid a potential trade war.

It is worth noting that Tesla had previously challenged the Trump Administration's attempt to impose tariffs on car parts in court back in 2020.

Musk's recent about-face on China tariffs demonstrates his evolved perspective on free trade and his belief that limiting market distortions is key to a healthy business environment.

As the debate over international trade and protectionism continues, Elon Musk's shift in stance adds an influential voice to the ongoing discussion. His support for unrestricted exchange of goods and services may play a role in shaping future trade policies, particularly between the world's two largest economies.
