Musk revealed that the court had ordered X to suspend the accounts of sitting members of the Brazilian Parliament as well as journalists.
During a discussion on Spaces, Musk expressed his concern about being asked to undertake actions that are considered illegal. He stated that X was being requested to suspend accounts and filter content in a manner that directly violated the law. Musk emphasized the need for transparency, expressing his frustration that X was being asked to pretend that the suspensions and regional blocking were due to the platform's Terms of Service, when in fact they were not.
The situation escalated further when Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes initiated an inquiry into Elon Musk over possible obstruction of justice, given his position as X's Chief Technology Officer. Judge Moraes has been at the forefront of regulations aimed at protecting people from harmful content and misinformation in Brazil.
Musk, however, has called for Judge Moraes' impeachment or resignation, asserting that the Supreme Court judge has been violating Brazilian law with the court orders targeting X.
The conflict between X and the Brazilian Supreme Court began when the judiciary branch issued orders for X to restrict or ban certain popular accounts. Initially, X complied with these court orders, but Musk later decided to lift the restrictions.
"We are lifting all restrictions. This judge has applied massive fines, threatened to arrest our employees, and cut off access to Brazil. As a result, we will probably lose all revenue in Brazil and have to shut down our office there. But principles matter more than profit," Musk explained.
According to Musk, the Brazilian Supreme Court has imposed a daily fine of $20,000 on X, with the threat of cutting off access to the country altogether. This conflict has already affected SpaceX's Starlink contracts in Brazil, as the government has suspended all agreements with the satellite internet provider.
Despite the setback, Musk announced that Starlink would continue to provide free internet services to local schools in Brazil, demonstrating his commitment to supporting educational initiatives.
The clash between X and the Brazilian Supreme Court highlights the increasing tensions between tech platforms and regulatory bodies worldwide. This conflict not only raises questions about the legal responsibilities of social media platforms but also underscores the challenges faced by global tech companies in navigating complex regulatory landscapes.
As the situation unfolds, all eyes will be on Elon Musk and X as they navigate the legal proceedings and their impact on the company's operations and the Brazilian social media landscape.
