In a recent turn of events, Tesla CEO and majority owner Elon Musk sparked controversy with a now-deleted post on X, raising questions about why there weren't more assassination threats against President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. This post came just hours after the second apparent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump at his West Palm Beach golf club.

Musk, who has a massive following of 197.8 million listed followers on X, posted the message in response to a user asking why there were attempts on Trump's life. Musk replied with a thought-provoking question and an emoji, implying the absence of similar threats against Biden and Harris.

Although both Biden and Harris have received assassination threats while in office, Musk faced immediate backlash for his post. Rather than backing down, he defended his statement for approximately nine hours before eventually deleting it. During that time, his tweet was viewed by at least 1.3 million users, with over 3,000 users reposting it and over 18,000 users liking it.

Following the deletion of the initial post, Musk penned two subsequent posts on X, claiming that his original comment was intended as a poorly received joke. He acknowledged that humor in written form is often misconstrued without proper context and delivery.

This incident marks a rare occurrence of Musk deleting a post in response to criticism, as he has faced controversy for previous X posts. In March 2021, he was ordered by the National Labor Relations Board to remove a social media post deemed as a threat to union organizers. However, as of now, the controversial tweet remains on the platform.

The response to Musk's post was quick, with the White House issuing a statement denouncing his language. White House spokesperson Andrew Bates emphasized the importance of condemning violence and stated that such rhetoric is irresponsible.

Elon Musk's involvement in controversial X posts is not unfamiliar, but his endorsement of Trump and support of his policies have further heightened attention. Musk's public endorsement came shortly after Trump survived his first assassination attempt at a Pennsylvania rally. The Tesla CEO has also voiced support for Trump's idea of creating a government efficiency commission to regulate federal spending.

As this story unfolds, questions arise about Musk's position as a major government contractor, involving his companies Tesla and SpaceX. Critics, such as former U.S. Naval War College professor Tom Nichols, highlight the potential consequences of such controversial statements on Musk's government contracts.

The fallout from Elon Musk's post on X continues to draw attention, emphasizing the need for responsible online discourse and the potential ramifications for public figures. In a time where political tensions run high, it serves as a reminder of the importance of thoughtful communication in the public sphere.
