The billionaire entrepreneur made his views known in an interview excerpt released on Tuesday, criticizing the bill that had strong support from President Donald Trump.
In the interview with CBS, which is set to air in full on Sunday, Musk stated that the so-called "Big Beautiful Bill" stands in opposition to the objectives of his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). He lamented that the bill not only fails to decrease the nation's deficit but actually increases it, thereby undermining the efforts of the DOGE team.
The spending bill, which passed the House by a single vote last week, encompasses much of Trump's domestic agenda, including elements on tax cuts, immigration, and other significant policies. Musk challenged the bill's merits, suggesting, “I think a bill can be big, or it can be beautiful, but I don't know if it can be both, in my personal opinion."
Launched by Musk with a promise to save $2 trillion, DOGE has already led to the closing or downsizing of 11 federal agencies and the departure of approximately 250,000 federal workers from their posts. According to Musk, these measures have saved taxpayers $160 billion. However, the nonpartisan Penn Wharton Budget Model, which tracks weekly Treasury data, reports that overall government spending has continued to rise.
The Tesla CEO's criticism may influence ongoing discussions about the bill's contents as it heads to the Senate, where its future is uncertain. In the Senate, Trump's ally, Republican Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson, is advocating for deeper spending cuts to reduce the deficit, while other GOP members are concerned about the proposed reductions to Medicaid and the reversal of some tax credits from the Inflation Reduction Act.
