The verdict comes after Peters' unsuccessful attempts to prove false claims that the 2020 election had been stolen from former President Donald Trump.
Peters, who served as the Mesa County clerk at the time of the alleged offenses, faced ten criminal charges, including seven felonies, for transferring voting data from county machines to allies of Trump. She entered a not guilty plea in March and subsequently resigned from her position as county clerk earlier this year.
The sentencing for Tina Peters is scheduled for October 3rd.
Mesa County District Attorney Daniel P. Rubinstein expressed his disappointment with Peters' actions, stating, "This community has suffered greatly from the dishonesty, lack of transparency, and refusal of Ms. Peters to take accountability." He emphasized the importance of checks and balances within any branch of government, including elected officials.
Despite facing criminal charges, Peters has persistently sought to capitalize on her status as a martyr for Trump's election conspiracy theories. In 2022, she ran for Colorado secretary of state, a role responsible for overseeing state elections, and came in third place in the Republican primary. In a twist of irony, Peters accused election officials of cheating and refused to concede her primary loss.
In February 2022, Peters was arrested for attempting to kick a police officer serving a search warrant on her iPad. The warrant was connected to allegations that she had illegally recorded a court hearing involving one of her deputies implicated in the election security breach.
Reacting to her conviction, Peters took to X, formerly Twitter, expressing her grief for those affected by Dominion brand voting systems and accusing the Secretary of State's attorneys of stealing votes and voices. She concluded her post with a message of hope, stating, "But we WILL win in the end," and tagged fellow conspiracy theorists Alex Jones, Mike Lindell, and Elon Musk.
The verdict against Tina Peters serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding the integrity of electoral processes and adhering to the law in public service.
