Using X, Trump's social media platform, he called for Rose's immediate induction into Major League Baseball’s Hall of Fame after the latter's recent death.
"The GREAT Pete Rose just died," Trump wrote. "He was one of the most magnificent baseball players ever to play the game. He paid the price! Major League Baseball should have allowed him into the Hall of Fame many years ago. Do it now, before his funeral!"
Pete Rose, permanently disqualified from baseball in 1989 due to gambling on games while playing and managing for the Cincinnati Reds, remains a celebrated figure among baseball enthusiasts, particularly in his hometown of Cincinnati. Trump's call for Rose's Hall of Fame induction is not a new sentiment from him; the former president has previously advocated for Rose's reinstatement.
During the 2016 Ohio presidential primary, Trump expressed his support for Rose to be included in the Hall of Fame, even sharing a photograph of a signed baseball from Rose that read, "Mr. Trump, please make America great again," along with Rose's signature. Rose's attorney, Ray Genco, clarified at the time that the baseball was not an endorsement but rather a gesture of respect.
Despite losing the primary to then-Ohio Gov. John Kasich, Trump won the state in the presidential election later that year, eventually defeating Hillary Clinton to become the 45th president. In early 2020, in light of the Houston Astros cheating scandal, Rose sought reinstatement, prompting another supportive tweet from Trump.
Rose’s remarkable career spanned from 1963 to 1986, during which he amassed 4,256 hits—more than any other player in history. Trump emphasized Rose's extensive efforts and contributions to the game despite his gambling issues, urging Major League Baseball to grant him the honor of entering the Hall of Fame.
For many fans and advocates, Trump's message is a powerful reminder of Rose's significant impact on baseball and the ongoing debate about his legacy and the Hall of Fame's role in recognizing his achievements.
