In a high-profile trial set to commence on Monday, former President Donald Trump has stated that he intends to testify in his own defense. The trial centers around allegations related to hush money payments and the falsification of business records, which Trump vehemently denies.
Trump addressed reporters at Mar-a-Lago on Friday and referred to the trial as a "witch hunt" that is detrimental to the judicial system in New York. Despite previously reneging on similar promises, Trump asserted that he will speak on his own behalf, emphasizing that he will tell the truth and highlighting that he believes there is no case against him.
The charges Trump faces include 34 counts of first-degree falsifying business records, which could potentially carry a maximum prison sentence of four years, as reported by The Guardian. The Manhattan district attorney's office, when approached by The New York Times, declined to comment on President Trump's statements.
Trump's legal team has attempted on three occasions to postpone his prosecution, but their efforts have been unsuccessful. Additionally, Trump has frequently criticized Judge Juan Merchan, citing the judge's daughter's involvement in political consulting with Democratic candidates as evidence of bias in the case. Taking matters further on Monday, Trump filed a lawsuit against Merchan, challenging a gag order that prevented him from disparaging witnesses, the judge's family, prosecutors, and court staff.
During his interaction with reporters on Friday, Trump continued to voice his grievances, claiming that the judge has a personal animosity towards him and expressing disbelief that Merchan has not recused himself due to alleged conflicts of interest.
This historic trial marks the first time a former U.S. president has faced criminal charges. Trump maintains his innocence and has pleaded not guilty to all counts brought against him. As the trial begins, observers await his testimony and the proceedings that will follow.
