Trump's consideration of Rubio, along with two other candidates, comes as he aims to secure a loyal and supportive vice presidential nominee.
According to The Washington Post, Trump has been discussing his potential picks with close confidantes and advisors in recent weeks. In a June interview with the conservative outlet Newsmax, Trump specifically mentioned Rubio as one of his top choices, alongside Governor Burgum from North Dakota and Senator J.D. Vance from Ohio.
Rubio's inclusion is notable due to his past clashes with Trump during the 2016 primary. At that time, Trump famously mocked Rubio as "Lil' Marco," while Rubio criticized Trump's character and even made a crude remark about him. However, since then, Rubio has become a vocal supporter of the former president and has expressed his willingness to accept an offer to be Trump's vice president in a second term.
The potential selection of Rubio is seen as a strategic move, particularly in light of the Democratic Party's efforts to contest the state of Florida, traditionally a Republican stronghold. Biden and his campaign have identified Florida as a potential battleground in the next election and have sought to focus on issues like abortion rights to challenge Trump's support in the state. Adding Rubio to the ticket could hinder these efforts, as he is viewed as a strong candidate by Republican strategists.
Trump has not yet announced his running mate officially, and there are speculations that he may wait until the week of the GOP convention in July to make his decision. The inclusion of Governor Burgum and Senator Vance on the shortlist adds some intrigue, especially considering both men have been staunch supporters of Trump and have not criticized him in the past.
It remains to be seen who Trump will ultimately choose as his vice presidential nominee for the 2024 election. However, the potential reconciliation with Marco Rubio signals a willingness by the former president to set aside past grudges and unite the party behind him in his bid to challenge President Joe Biden for the White House once again.
