When asked about the potential pardon, Trump commented that no formal request has been made, although he acknowledges that the issue is under consideration by many.
During an interaction on May 30, Trump expressed that while no one has approached him directly about pardoning Combs, he is aware that people have been contemplating it. He humorously noted, "People have been very close to asking." According to Rolling Stone, allies and longtime friends of Combs have reached out to Trump administration officials, with discussions dating as far back as the presidential transition period and continuing into Trump's second term.
An anonymous source close to Combs suggested that the music mogul is desperate to avoid incarceration. "He’s always been this way," the source claimed, adding that Combs "doesn’t even like Donald Trump." In the past, Trump and Combs shared a somewhat amiable relationship, with Trump referring to Combs as "a good friend" on The Apprentice, and Combs calling Trump "a friend of mine" in 2015. However, their relationship appears to have soured with Trump's foray into politics.
Trump disclosed that he hasn't closely followed Combs' trial and mentioned that they haven't communicated for years. Reflecting on their strained relationship, Trump remarked, "He used to really like me a lot, but I think when I ran for politics that relationship busted up." Despite not monitoring the trial closely, Trump emphasized that he is willing to consider the facts objectively, irrespective of personal feelings.
Combs’ trial commenced earlier this month and is anticipated to continue until around July 4. Prosecutors allege that Combs used his substantial empire to facilitate the sex trafficking of two women, including his ex-girlfriend Casandra "Cassie" Ventura, from 2009 to 2024.
Despite the efforts of Combs' associates, some officials within the Trump administration have dismissed the likelihood of a pardon, considering the gravity of the accusations as a significant obstacle. The officials conveyed that such a move could result in a public relations dilemma for the White House.
Trump has a history of granting pardons to prominent hip-hop figures, including NBA YoungBoy, who thanked Trump for the opportunity to rebuild his life following a pardon for gun charges. Additionally, Lil Wayne received clemency towards the end of Trump's first term, although the gesture was met with mixed reactions from former White House officials, who felt that Wayne might have manipulated the situation.
As the trial progresses, it remains to be seen whether Combs will formally seek a pardon and how the Trump administration will respond to such a request.
